The staff at the hotel advised us to leave by 3:00 a.m. for our 6:45 flight to Hanoi...so we did! We got to the airport by 4:00 and discovered that Krispy Kreme opened at 5:00. We got a Subway breakfast sandwich and followed with Krispy Kreme for dessert. Michael had THREE donuts...
We took a cab to the Rising Dragon Hotel, where we were involved in a fair bit of negotiating before settling on a price for two smaller rooms to replace the larger suite we had reserved but which apparently had a broken air conditioner. After checking in, we embarked on our own walking tour of Hanoi--complete with dodging thousands of frenzily-driven motor scooters, eating bun cha in a local eatery (soupy-noodly stuff!), and winding our way up and down the streets with their plethora (that word's for you, Leo!) of tiny shops and restaurants. It was like nothing we have ever seen. It's difficult to find the words to adequately describe this place. After a late afternoon siesta back at the hotel, we ventured back out for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant that our hotel had referred to as a buffet. It looked like a very interesting buffet, but turned out to be an order-off-the-menu sort of thing. We enjoyed our food--except the "glutinous steamed rice cake with honey." Nothing even remotely like cake--it consisted of chewy rubbery stuff swimming in honey sauce...
Dinner over, we returned to our hotel to await...
